Tom graduated from Pembroke College, Oxford, in 1995 and immediately embarked on a PGCE in maths education at Bristol University. His career started in primary and secondary schools in Bedfordshire before teaching internationally for three years in Spain and Austria. Returning to the UK, Tom moved to Bath to take up the post of Numeracy Coordinator at Writhlington School, where he worked from 2003 to 2007.

Since 2007, Tom has worked full-time as a tutor in Bath. Alongside his wife Nicola, they own and run the Kip McGrath Education Centres in Weston and Fairfield Park. Tom’s philosophy on teaching maths is simple: “I believe that children learn by doing. Children enjoy maths by succeeding at it: for them to succeed, they must start by working at the right pace and level for themselves. Confidence is the key.”

Tom’s motivational and success-orientated approach to teaching maths has a rapid impact on children’s self-esteem and a long-lasting effect on their achievement at school. Tom lives locally and enjoys hill-walking, running and watching rugby. Together with Nicola, he has one child, Ted.
