Tim Baddeley: Dyslexia specialist
Tim Baddeley is a Cambridge University graduate in French and German. For many years he ran a successful Modern Languages department at a leading Secondary school near Bath. Having experimented widely with new techniques aimed at reaching the disaffected he wrote his first book, 'Going Native : Teaching German Unplugged'. Here he explores the use of Art, Craft and above all singing with pop music to develop radical new teaching and learning techniques.
Since then he has also trained to become a specialist in dyslexia, and now trains teachers and other professionals for the British Dyslexia Association, as well as coaching undergraduates as part of Bath Learning Support. Tim sees dyslexia not so much as an affliction as an opportunity for original thought, even if for many people it feels like misery. There is a great deal that can be done to make learning accessible to people who think in a different way, and above all to increase their confidence. At the same time we should all work to make education less industrial and more of an adventure. The dyslexic agenda offers useful opportunities for this.
Tim Baddeley is available for Training days in Dyslexia Awareness to groups of teachers or to particular departments. In particular practical solutions for dyslexia, including Mathematics issues, can be discussed.
'It was a brilliant day's training. You made the group comfortable and it went ever so fast. I really enjoyed meeting someone with your enthusiasm and knowledge.'
Ali McCammon, (SENCO Belfast)
'Tim Baddeley is a highly innovative and fresh voice in the world of MFL teaching today. He has stood conventional pedagogy on its head and opened a natural and enjoyable portal to children's linguistic potential. After so much wasted effort and public expense, this must be the way forward for the vast majority of our pupils'.
Godfrey Bishop (Editor, 'The Good Schools Guide')
